This old historical budget hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Georgetown Penang with most of the tourist sites within walking distance. It is just very convenient, be it sightseeing, shopping and dining.
It is housed in an old charming bungalow with a beautiful entrance door leading into the high ceiling hall.
The first thing that greet you is this unique made-to order check-in counter that is build right underneath the grand wooden staircase that leads to the upper floor. There is a working vintage square clock hanging above it.
Looks like this budget hotel and the modern five star hotels in K.L. such as JW Marriott Hotel & Mandarin Oriental Hotel have something in common, similar check out times!
The beautiful part of this hotel is the two grand wooden staircases which is separated by a central open-air courtyard with beautiful metal work beams.
Every room has a double door to its entrance and hubby is seen here holding to the wooden swing door which is rarely seen today.
This hotel and its interior decor is kept pretty well and give this place an interesting ambience. I can't help admiring all the lovely tiles in the interior as well as those on the exterior of the building.
The room rates are very economical and with very basic and simple amenities, with smiling services by the few elderly man that look after the place which is just opposite the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and next to the city clubbing area.
Cathay Hotel is located at 15, Leith Street, 10200 Penang, Malaysia. Tel : 04-2626271 and Fax : 04-2639300

this place looks authentic.. good idea for photography & video! (giving me ideas now.. !) :)
very well kept history building, but it was a waste for the unhealthy activities behind the scene. no wonder they are not in the tourism listing.
