There are many coffee shops in and around Georgetown and I would like to share with you this particular one. Kong Thai Lai is located in a pre-war double storey shop along the left hand side of the one way Hutton Lane in Penang. I visited this coffee shop which is near to the T- junction of Penang Road and Campbell Street with my friend, Sidney and Ken.
The Kedai Kopi Kong Thai Lai became known as it was the favorite coffee shop for the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew, The Founder of Honda Malaysia. He used to have his cup of drink in this coffee shop which is located on the left hand side of the road. According to the coffee shop owner, his favorite table was the first one leading into the shop.

It commands the best view of the busy Hutton Lane in front of it.
We did not have the opportunity to occupy that table as an elderly man was having that seat. We opted for the one and only marble table which was just next to it.
There is only one hawker stall selling economy rice during lunch hour. At our time of visit, the only available food was half boiled egg and toast bread spread with butter and kaya.

We did enjoyed this quick and simple tea time snack especially the refreshing Kopi-o Peng. There are many more other great places in Penang with its own piece of history. Kedai Kopi Kong Thai Lai is one of them.

So this is Boon Siew's favorite coffee shop! Friends in Penang have told me about it and about his penchant for going there even after he acquired his fortune, but I never got to see it, till now. Thanks. They have shown me his house and told me about the feng shui related to the gates in front of it.
louis - Glad you like this post.
